Company Background

Cheryl LandesIn January 1985, Cheryl Landes began writing and publishing freelance travel, history, and recreation articles on a part-time basis.

Six years later, she fell into technical writing while working full-time as an administrative assistant for a marine transportation company in Seattle. During that time, she discovered a passion for technical communication and has never looked back. She enjoys the challenges unique to this field, along with the endless opportunities to learn new technologies and expand her existing knowledge.

Cheryl expanded her freelance services to technical clients in October 1995 and named her business Tabby Cat Communications, which is registered as a sole proprietorship in the State of Washington. Sole proprietorships have one clear advantage over other types of business structures: You are assured that the person who meets with you to discuss your project requirements will carry out your needs from start to finish. Communication isn’t distorted, because the same person is intimately involved in your project every step of the way.

Cheryl’s desire to produce quality technical documentation shows in the ten awards she has received from the Society for Technical Communication for her work. Seven of these awards, including one Best of Show in technical publications, are from the Boston Chapter, and one is from the Pittsburgh Chapter. The other two are international excellence awards.

Although Cheryl’s passion as a technical communicator is stronger than ever, she hasn’t lost sight of her non-technical interests. Over the years, she has published more than 100 travel and Northwest history articles in magazines and newspapers throughout the United States and Canada, along with three books:

• Beautiful America's Seattle (now in its second edition)
• Beautiful America's Idaho
• Those Wild Northwest Days

In addition, Cheryl enjoys sharing her knowledge with others in the field. She is a regular speaker at technical communication and indexing conferences and meetings throughout the United States and Canada. She has mentored four fledgling indexers, who now operate successful freelance businesses of their own.
